LARA takes the pixelated movement patterns of early computer game characters as its starting point to explore digitally altered physicalities. Mirjam Sögner translates the unnatural qualities and glitchy image errors of digital avatars back onto her own body, creating an uncanny hybrid. Imitating the imitation, a physical body seemingly trapped in the digital realm comes to live. As our digital and physical realities grow together, this solo offers a bodily response to our changing experience of the world.
Mirjam Sögner is an Austrian choreographer and performer based in Berlin.
She studied contemporary dance and dance making both at the conservatory Vienna and ArtEZ Arnhem in the Netherlands (BA dance/maker) from which she graduated with an extra degree in artistic research in 2013. Her graduation piece OOZE was shown at notable newcomer festivals in the Netherlands and Austria such as ITS Festival Amsterdam, Korzo Den Haag and tanz_house Salzburg.
In 2014 Mirjam received both a DanceWEB Scholarship as well as the STARTStipendium awarded by the Austrian Cultural Council, allowing her to realize the solo-work LARA (Premiere: March 2015 / HAU 3 Berlin) which was selected for the Aerowaves 2016 - a dance-platform creating international performance possibilities for Europe´s most promising newcomers. Since its premiere LARA has been touring extensively throughout Europe (Dansens Hus / Oslo, Rote Farbrik / Zürich, Frascati / Amsterdam, Brut / Wien…).
Currently she is creating a new evening-length duet around and about Isadora Duncan titled “The Dancer of the Future “ – a first sketch of the work has been already shown at Sophiensäle Berlin in January 2016 (Tanztage Berlin) and will premiere in February 2017 in Salzburg.
Recently she has co-created Katharina Greimel´s new solo work “mach dir einen kopf” at Tanzquartier Vienna and collaborated with the visual artist Stefan Panhans in his new movie “Freeroam” which will be released in November 2016.
As a choreographer and teacher she has furthermore worked for Dschungel Wien (Farbenreich 2016, My Body in Me 2015), Kibbutzim College Tel Aviv (We Fade to Grey 2013), New Talents Biennale Cologne 2014 (Äther) and London Fashion Weeks, and has assisted Royston Maldoom in a large-scale community dance project in Ramallah/Palestine.
As a performer Mirjam has collaborated with cielaroque - Helen Weinzierl, Jasper van Luijk, Ivan Perez, Julian Barnett, Akemi Takeya and others.
