4 weeks research residency of choreographers: Marysia Zimpel, Magdalena Chowaniec, Natalia Wilk which starts the work on Zimpel’s new piece with a premiere in March 2015 in Old Brewery.

Maria Zimpel works within the plane of dance, choreography and performance, focusing on explorations concerning movement and researching the limits of physicality. She studied at the HZT at the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK), and also at the Institute off Cultural Studies at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań. Maria’s encounter with Gill Clark, Rosalind Crisp and Isabelle Schad made a strong impression on her artistic development and understanding of dance. Maria Zimpel has authored pieces like Working like a Dog” which was her debut in a duet with poet Eric Green at the Image Tanz Festival in Vienna (2010); the solo What do you really miss?, created under the Solo Projekt 2012 in Poznań; s c a t t e r (2013/2014), in collaboration with Zeina Hanna and Bryan Eubanks (at the invitation of FrivMove Zamek/CK Zamek), noish~ (2014), which was created in collaboration with experimental musician Gerard Lebik (under the Performat series at Galeria Miejska Arsenał) and the trailer for the trio What do you really miss? with which Maria qualified for the prestigious Danse Elargie competition in Paris (2014). Maria Zimpel has worked with artists like Deufert&Plischke, Isabelle Schad, Aleksandra Borys, Rosalind Crisp and Kat Valastur. Between 2010 and 2012, she was a member of the Vienna-based theatre collective God’s Entertainment. Her artistic work is based mainly in Poznań, Berlin and Vienna. Recently, following Agnes Martin’s example, she has been referring to herself as an ‘abstract expressionist’.

After graduating from the National Ballet School in Bytom, Magdalena Chowaniec continued to study dance at the A. Bruckner University in Linz where she received a Master of Arts degree. Based in Vienna, Magdalena is active as dancer, choreographer, performance artists and lecturer, in addition to being and bassist and singer in a garage punk band called The Mob Fixing Freedom. She has worked with artists like the Superamas, Mark Tompkins, Oleg Soulimenko, Jerome Bel, Amanda Pina, Florentina Holzinger, Mathieu Grenier and Agata Maszkiewicz. Many of her original works, including Hold your horses, New Viennese Organic Actionism, Until death do us part, When I don't dance I collect crystal balls and Attan stays with us have been shown in Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Romania, the Netherlands, Poland, Bulgaria and France. As a choreographer, Magdalena is also involved in work with refuges, and takes part in research projects concerning empathy in music and dance.

Natalia Wilk is a freelance dancer, a graduate of the Ludiwk Solski Academy for the Dramatic Arts, Department of Dance Theatre in Bytom (2013), and the University of Silesia where she majored in political science (2010). She has worked with Isabelle Schad in Collective Jumps; Koen Augustijn in Dance Moves Cities; Cosmin Manolescu in Fragile, under the E-motional, re:thinking dance residency; Paweł Passini and Robert Hayden in Dynamika Metamorfozy at the Grotowski Institute; Robert Talarczyk in Open Chopin, and the Harakiri Farmers collective in STILLE. Natalia received an Alternative Dance Academy scholarship in 2014, a scholarship of the Marshal of the Silesian Province in the field of culture in 2013, and a grant of the Rezydencja/Premiera 2012 programme at Klub Żak in Gdańsk, in which she created a solo called Pacierz pokrętny, under the artistic guidance of Pia Meuthen (Panama Pictures Dance Theatre). She has danced in projects created by Idan Cohen, Rafał Urbacki, Victoria Fox, Guilherme Botelho, and Les gens d'Uterpan. She has also taken part in master classes and coaching sessions provided by Les Ballets C de la B, David Zambrano, Luquid Loft Companie, Anna Van Den Broek, Yasmeen Godder, Mala Kline and Igor Podsiadły. In addition to dancing, Natalia also writes about dance. In 2011, she conducted a research project on dance critique at the San Diego State University in California. Her life’s passion is hitchhiking which has allowed her to travel to places like Central Asia, the Balkans, West Africa and the Caucasus. Her next destination is outer space.
